play the song Aquarium, by Camille Saint-Saëns, start from the top and slowly scroll down listen here - [link] I've been listening to it on practically a loop while drawing this, i love all Camille Saint-Saëns' work.
This is the biggest drawing i've ever worked on!
Now that that's out'a the way, This was done for the love of my life. I've known her for seven, but it's our sixth year anniversary this week, and because she almost never checks out my DA page, it's totally safe to post this here now Disney's The Little Mermaid was always one of her favorite movies as a child, and i thought i'd adult it up a bit, and make it almost as tall as she is (it's 10'by60'). Ironically enough, the prince has the same name as me, so i used myself as reference lol, and i originally used her for reference on Ariel, but in the process i separated the eyes a little, made the nose more straight, and lowered the lips closer to the chin, to give off a little more of a fish feel to it. I also chose to base Ariel off a tiger fish because they look so pretty, so i thought eh...why not....along with her fin hair and all, which was inspired by a beta-fish's tail. At the top i have the seagull Scuttle, then when you go down you see Flounder, Sebastian, the two eels, and a couple tentacles belonging to Ursula, but i tried to make everything feel a little twisted and real. I had heavily contemplated on putting Eric's dog in the boat next to him. i think it would have put a nicer balance to the top, yet when i really thought about it, i wanted him to look lonely, as if there was nothing interesting for him in this world, and what he wouldn't give to be down there.....what mysteries lie upon the ocean floors. Something that had crossed my own mind when i watched that movie as a child. I would much rather have told Ariel, "yo, forget up here, there is 80% more to explore down there!" lol. I also have her looking all alone down there, even though she is surrounded by life. She just wants to jump up in that boat with him!
So anyway, this is my take on it all, i hope ya'll dig it and i especially hope my fiance loves it when i give it to her!...i'm talking about the drawing....lol
*EDIT - So I showed it to my fiance, and she didn't like all the negative space at the top, She also told me her favorite scene was the "kiss da gurl" scene, so i decided to throw in a couple weeping willows, and lighting to go with it. I didn't originally want to have that line that separates the top from under the water, so when you scrolled down it all felt like everything was connected, but now that i made the top of the drawing SO busy, with a more unique light source, i decided to add it. I find Ariel doesn't seem like she is in as deep of water as before, but it does look nice regardless. And now everything has a much nicer balance to it!, and i got to draw over that badly drawn castle in the background lol. The only thing i miss is scuttle isn't in the picture any more, and i tried to add him, but it really didn't look good.
The lineart and the coloring work really blew me away
I have featured this wonderful piece in my journal. You can find it here -> [link]
Many thanks for the amazing art!
